They are both ideal for hair, face and body but how can you tell which one works best or which one will work for you. One of them may work better for you hair while the other suits your body better. Understanding the benefits, the differences and how they can work for you is the ideal way to a healthier and more vibrant body.

Rhassoul or Bentonite Clay

Rhassoul Clay

Found in Morocco, Rhassoul Clay has been used for centuries. It is a natural mineral clay derived from volcanic activity and mineral deposits in the Atlas Mountains. It was first used in the 8th century and Moroccan women have sworn by its ability to look after and care for their skin like no other product on the market. The name Rhassoul comes from the Arabic word for washing,or “Rhassala”.

It has a unique ability that enables it to draw  impurities from the skin as well as the hair. It also has detoxifying properties while cleansing and reducing dryness. It is reddish-brown in colour and can help to eliminate dandruff while also nourishing the scalp and easing eczema and psoriasis symptoms.

What are the Benefits?

When used correctly, Rhassoul clay has the ability to moisturise and soften the skin. It can bring hair back to life by reducing dryness and removing any toxins as well as product that may have built up in the hair. It can help to improve the elasticity of hair and it can also cleans and unblock pores on the scalp. It will make de-tangling a lot easier while it can also decrease flakiness. It cleans in a similar way to Bentonite but it leaves hair glossy, soft and moisturised.

On the skin it can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, seemingly defying the laws of ageing. It is packed full of nutrients that can encourage the production of collagen and the magnesium content is easily absorbed by the skin. This helps to deal with damage caused by free radicals which is the cause of wrinkles.  The particles within the clay have a negative charge and this allows the positive impurities to get pulled from within the skin.

The tiny particles also help it to act as an exfoliator, removing dead skin and rejuvenating the appearance of skin.

Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay is made from volcanic ash. When added to water, this impure mud produces an incredible electric charge. This charge can help to remove positively charged products form within the hair and body. It also absorbs any toxins and impurities from the body as well as chemicals and heavy metals.

As a clay it is considered to have healing benefits. This is due to the fact that it has a minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium and silica in high concentration levels. There are a number of Bentonite clays available with each one being named after the main element.

What are the Benefits?

Bentonite offers it all. It can detoxify, cleanse and restore the balance of your hair and body. Any impurities are drawn from the hair and the body while it works to restore the PH balance of the hair. Its ability to swell when it is added to water means that it can draw toxins from the body giving it excellent healing benefits. It can be used as a face mask and many people use it as a form of toothpaste.

Which one should you choose?

It is difficult to say that one is better than other. Rhassoul is more expensive than Bentonite but both have different  uses. This may seem strange considering both of they work by drawing out toxins from the body and they both help to remove product build up from the hair. If you are looking for a clay that is highly absorbent then Bentonite is the choice for you but if you want an extra level of moisturising and softness then Rhassoul should be the preferred option.

Bentonite may be a little too harsh for those with sensitive skin due to the way that it draws impurities from the skin but Rhassoul is known to reduce inflammation and irritation. Both clays have advantages and disadvantages that are different to each individual. However, both have amazing benefits, it is just a case of understanding which one can work for you and your health and beauty needs.
